So yesterday, when I was writing about the Titirangi Chicken Menace (yes, I feel that deserves capitals…if only because it makes me laugh) and I mentioned the restaurant in Titirangi called Southern Fried Chicken, I really wanted to talk about their menu.
This restaurant is a type that I believe is exclusive to New Zealand, although I wouldn’t be surprised if they existed in Australia and England as well.
Here is their menu….
This is typical of an NZ fish & chip shop..although I don’t think I’ve seen an “American hot Dog” on the menu of any of the places I’ve been.
And what the heck is a sea dog?!?
The restaurants are typically run by immigrants, usually Asian (this is not an assumption, I’ve seen it, and read articles about why this is so) which is probably why you can see won tons and dumplings on most menus. And actually, this menu has way less Chinese dishes than most I’ve seen.
I’ve never been a huge fan of fish, unless it’s in sushi form, but I love fried things to a fault, and have tried several fish and chip places with Tom. They are such a very NZ thing that I felt I had to try them.
The food is greasy and comes wrapped in thick white paper usually taped shut with masking tape.
And it’s delicious…or at least the stuff I’ve tried is delicious which is the fried fish, chips (of course), corn fritters, and potato fritters.
I tried fried chicken from one place once, and it wasn’t bad, but I come from Texas and I don’t think you can beat fried chicken from the southern part of the US.
The stores are typically pretty cheap looking, and honestly, the majority of them don’t look like places you’d normally want to try. But if you ever come to NZ, give them a chance. And you don’t have to go hunting for one, they’re pretty much everywhere.
They ain’t healthy, but they are pretty darn yummy if you don’t mind putting something greasy in your belly.
And the eggrolls are almost always HUGE.
Anyway, I’m not feeling much like writing today, but I wanted to share this typical NZ restaurant with y’all.
It’s time to cook those cauliflower meatballs I’ve been putting off for days.
Wish me luck.
