This morning I went to go meet up with Tom’s sister. She was taking a bus ride from Te Awamutu to the Northland to stay on a cousin’s farm for a few weeks and had a stop over in downtown Auckland for three hours. We wandered about the streets while I un-skillfully attempted to use Google Navigation to get us to a cute cafe of some sort. We wandered and wandered with me yelling at my phone “What are you DOING, Google? We’re going in circles!!” I finally gave up and we decided to go the old-fashioned route and just wander about until we found something we liked. Which we did….eventually.
It is an absolutely beautiful day out there today…all blue-skied with whispy little clouds and it’s a balmy 70 degrees. And I actually found myself saying, in a VERY Kiwi-like way, “Oh my god, it’s so hot out!”
Y’all, I am losing my Texan.
To be fair, though it’s not nearly as hot here as in Texas, the sun definitely feels much more…..burny? I seriously don’t know a better word to describe it. It’s just stronger here because there’s a thinner ozone and the UV index is extremely high. In the Mediterranean during the summer the UV index hits 9 to 10, on a few of the hottest days in Florida it can hit 12. In New Zealand the summer UV index often exceeds 12 and even gets to 14 in the top parts of the North Island.
The first part of my life was California, a few East Coast years, and then a whole lot of livin’ in Texas yet I never, ever sunburned. Get me to New Zealand where I lay outside for an hour or two on a blanket reading and BOOM…. this little Mexican has a sunburn.
See? The sun is burny.
After I got home I went for a walk and took this picture from the hill above the neighborhood arena. I take a lot of pictures of this marina because I just absolutely love the look of the CBD skyline with the ocean in front. I never get tired of seeing it.
Despite what many people may think, the weather in New Zealand is pretty darn shitty a lot of the time. In fact, despite those 100 degree days, I’d say overall that Austin weather is much nicer. So a beautiful day here is a really special thing.
Amazing what a better mood a bit of sun can put you in, eh? <——–See? Losin’ my Texan and picking up that Kiwi vernacular.
Almost a month since Tom’s been gone. And less than 3 weeks til I fly to Texas. Time is going by pretty darn quick.
Time to go hang laundry out to dry in this beautiful weather.
