I have bronchitis. Apparently I’ve had it for some time now. My doctor berated me a bit for not coming in earlier because she said bronchial infections can cause permanent damage and/or can turn into pneumonia. She also told me that she’s impressed I’ve been getting out of bed in the morning, making it to work, going to the gym (ahem…..sometimes), etc. She says I must be tough. The doctor who performed surgery on my knee said the same thing when he asked me to rate my knee pain. I rated it mid-rage and he said he didn’t believe me and that I must be tough and a suffer-in-silence type of gal. Tom laughed his ass off at that one.
Regardless of what the skeptics (Tom) might think, I have now decided that my pain threshold is really high and that I’m super tough. I’m practically a super-hero.
I forgot to ask my doctor if the bronchitis might explain why I’ve suddenly developed a craving for ice. Seriously. It’s a bit weird. I’ll be sitting there reading or doing something on the computer and I’ll start thinking about eating ice and my mouth will start watering. Sometimes, watching a TV show with SNOW in it can spark the craving. The characters will be trudging through falling snow and I’ll start thinking, “Mmmmm….ice” and I have to go get some. Tom thinks it’s super weird. And honestly, I do too. I’ll be in the kitchen with a small kitchen knife hacking away at the ice tray so I can get small manageable chips and Tom will hear it and yell, “Just drink water!!” But the craving isn’t because I’m dehydrated. I can chug a glass of water and still want ice. It’s really strange. I meant to ask my doctor about it and I totally forgot. It shall forever remain a mystery.
Have you ever watched Black Mirror? It’s a drama where every episode stands alone (think Twilight Zone) and they’re dark and satirical tales that explore techno-paranoia and the ramifications of technology. At first I hated the show, probably having to do with the fact that my mom and I watched the very first episode together and it involved the PM of England having sex with a pig. After years of hearing people talk about how great the show is I finally gave it another try. And some of the episodes are really good.
I bring this up because my favorite episode takes place in a world where everyone rates each other constantly. Don’t like how the barrista at the coffee shop forgot to give you the little cookie with your drink? Give them a thumbs down on your phone. Did someone just hold the door for you at the grocery store? Give them a thumbs up. The social rating system dictates jobs, where you can live, methods of travel, etc. I found the episode to be a bit discomforting because it didn’t seem like that unrealistic of a future for humankind.
And guess what?
China is doing it.
Though it’s not EXACTLY the same, China is currently testing a social credit system which they plan to launch in 2020. The system will be mandatory and includes things like not waiting for pedestrians to cross when driving, spending too much money on frivolous in-app purchases, wasting too much time on video games, etc. I couldn’t find any examples of positive actions which would increase one’s credit, just actions which will decrease it. A low social credit score could mean someone’s children would get denied entrance to, or thrown out of, private schools, the ability to travel throughout China or the world would be denied, and dating websites wouldn’t try as hard to find someone a perfect match as they would for people with higher social credit scores.
Isn’t that NUTS?!
Sometimes I really don’t know where this world is heading.
I bet you aliens out there are watching us from their spaceships and just shaking their heads in pity.
